Jamming a Text

A great way to evaluate what students know about using comprehension strategies is to utilize the strategy of “Jamming a Text”.  This strategy will help you see how students visualize, predict, make connections, summarize, question, and infer.  Here is a quick summary of how to “Jam a Text”.

1.  Provide a list of the six comprehension strategies.

2.  Give each student 3 post-it notes.

3.  Choose a read aloud.

4.  Select three stopping points in the read aloud.

5.  At each stopping point, ask the students to jot down their thinking.

6.  Add the students’ post-it notes to your list of comprehension strategies and sort them.  (Wallwisher)
